  • Officers: Terry Thompson, President; Wayne Ward, Vice President; Darlene Atwood, Secretary; Shirley Brahaney, Treasurer
  • Representation on the Executive Committee by each district
  • What it means to be a Democrat: Darlene will copy this and we will have as handouts.

Evelyn Cook

  • An independent voter called her and said, “It’s time I got off the fence.”
  • The DWJC needs to do a better job of getting the word to our members about Democratic Party general meetings
  • The country is facing moral bankruptcy and we must set as our highest priority to elect a Democratic president in 2008
  • The Republican in Johnson County do not see the dire consequences of staying on the current national path
  • Change the next meeting to May 19, 9:00 am, Community Center, Committee meetings, seconded, and approved
  • We must work district by district to get people involved in the Democratic Party
  • The next meeting will not have an end time; we will work until we’re done
  • We need to survey all members as to time of meetings: Should they be later?
  • Publicity Committee will set a schedule for people to man the tables at festivals

  • Article on Evelyn Cook becoming President (Celia)
  • Included in The Progress Edition of The Tomahawk on March 21 there will be an organization listing and group photo (Celia)

  • Fund raisers
  • Input from those present: voting and voting machines
  • Brochure: Young Democratic Voters—quotes from, need for Sunrise Festival (June 1 & 2) and Trade Days (June 22-24)

Meeting items presented by Evelyn Cook, President:

  • March 31 election of JCD officers and executive board, upstairs in Courtroom, 10 am
  • Vote and approve of a booth at Trade Days
  • History: Louis May-The Democratic Party in Johnson County meets in a phone booth and the Republicans held a scavenger hunts to find a Democrat; Look Magazine determined in the 1930s that Johnson County was the most Republican county in the US; Evelyn has a 4 volume history of the TN Democratic party up to 1040; Evelyn’s mom was made a colonel in the TN Guard shortly before her death
  • Two goals: 2007 establish a Young Democrats group; 2008 get out the vote

Darlene Atwood:

  • The Johnson County voting machines are safe
  • In the last election, 52% of votes were cast during early voting
  • By the next election, there will be Vote Centers established in the county where anyone from the county may vote early

Dee Lewis: Can a person be a member even though she can’t attend the meetings? Yes

Carol Maulden, Membership Committee: Every member will be getting a sheet of Democratic voters to call and get them involved and voting.
